Barcelona dismisses Ernesto Valverde and signs Quique Setién at the front of the bench

first_imgThe Ernesto Valverde era in Barcelona is already past. The club, after the debacle of the Super Cup and endless rumors, has announced the dismissal of Txingurri thus ending two and a half seasons leading the first team in which LaLiga has won twice, a Copa del Rey (lost another final) and another Spanish Super Cup, the competition that ended up being the last blow for Viandar de la Vera. His substitute, a Quique Setién who gets the great opportunity of his career after leading Las Palmas and Real Betis, among other groups, and who signs until 2022 with the elections to the Blaugrana presidency on the horizon.Four titles but the feeling that he never knew how to take over the reins of one of the most complicated costumes in the world. In the shade, due to the so-called Champions League disasters in Rome and Liverpool, the Valverde stage as coach of Barcelona closes with another failure in the fight for a championship, although after signing the 80 best minutes of the season in addition to be a leader in LaLiga and stand in the round of the top continental competition.Because against Atlético de Madrid, the culé team did not deserve to lose in the semifinals. But football is like that and a bad final straight match led to the rojiblancos going 2-1 (with two other goals voided in Barça) and that led to the last anger of the directive against his coach. That one that never gave the full confidence of Josep María Bartomeu and its surroundings and was only saved in June 2019 by the insistence of the strong block of the wardrobe, with Leo Messi in the lead. He leaves with four titles (two leagues, between them) after two and a half campaignsThe Cantabrian coach signs until 2022 with the elections on the horizonThis Tuesday will be presented at the Camp Nou and will debut before Granada After tense days in Can Barça, trips to Qatar and clandestine meetings but telegraphed loudly, Bartomeu has met with Valverde on the return to training to communicate his dismissal. That has been a reality after the meeting with the Board of Directors this Monday, where the arrival until 2022 of Quique Setién has been closed and once it has also been announced, one that will be presented this Tuesday with the president, in order to explain everything that happened. In this way, Valverde leaves and the Cantabrian coach arrives (‘us’ from Xavi and Koeman through), to urgently take the culé box before his official debut in LaLiga (Sunday, at 9:00 p.m. against Granada). With the Camp Nou present, the culé fan will dictate his sentence: support for the team before the new stage or criticism for being participants of the goodbye of the Txingurri.Txingurri fell ‘the brown’ without NeymarAn Extremaduran coach who arrived in the summer of 2017 to take over from the successful, but short, stage of Luis Enrique in the dressing room. Already without Neymar from the beginning, due to his escape to PSG, Valverde had to reinvent himself (after losing his first Super Cup against Madrid) with the signings in extremis of Dembélé and Coutinho. Two players who never knew how to get the expected match and also largely blamed their method, as in the aforementioned debacles of the Olympic of Rome, Anfield, Cup against Valencia or the last of Jeddah, as well as the difficult coupling of Griezmann, irregularities with Arthur or the strange substitutions of Busquets.Conqueror of the two leagues he has faced, the first Cup and the second Super Cup, his triumphs were hidden under the technical superiority of Messi and company on the grass. Not the defeats, which weighed too much on the fans and were exhausting the patience of the board. That in his last year and a half in the club, there are elections in 2021, he has chosen Quique Setién as a relay until 2022, which suggests that he will be chosen for the bench of the continuity candidacy.Racing from Santander, Poli Ejido, Equatorial Guinea, Logroñés, Lugo, Las Palmas and Betis in his career as a coach, Setién comes up with a much bigger challenge. Get in front of a much superior club in everything that represents the previous ones and move forward with a season that has become entrenched by the lack of confidence in Valverde, which exploded after falling into the reformed Super Cup.center_img 01/13/2020 – 20:24 | 23:24 – 01/13/20last_img read more

Brock Lesnar’s WWE Future After UFC Retirement ProMax 440 BJJ GI There’s UFC Heavyweights, And Then There’s Shaq It’s almost shocking Wanderlei Silva never actually killed someone inside the PRIDE Fighting Championships ring.I’m sure he would have been devastated — he’s a jovial guy from all accounts — but the aggression he displayed in Japan was second to none and more often than not left his opponent unconscious on the canvas.Brutal knockout after brutal knockout litter his PRIDE résumé and the list of victims is a who’s who of mixed martial arts’ finest. Kazushi Sakuraba, Quinton Jackson, Yuki Kondo, and Guy Mezger all share the same experience of being put to sleep by “The Axe Murderer.”There should really be some kind of support group.Another former champion who escaped a similar fate was Rich Franklin, who locked horns with the Brazilian at UFC 99 in Germany three years ago. They battled back and forth for three rounds with “Ace” earning the decision victory.Silva gets a second chance at knocking Franklin out next Saturday (June 23) when the two meet inside the Octagon in the former PRIDE champion’s home country of Brazil. Their rematch will serve as the main event of UFC 147, a last minute replacement to accommodate Vitor Belfort — The Ultimate Fighter Brazil coach opposite Silva — and his broken left hand. Before “Ace” and “The Axe Murderer” dance for a second time, let’s take a look at one of Silva’s most impressive performances inside the PRIDE ring.In 2006, the defunct Japanese fight company held an openweight tournament and the Brazilian filled in for an injured Fedor Emelianenko, taking on thick-skulled and heavy-handed Kazuyuki Fujita in the second round. In less than 10 minutes, Silva did what had never happened in nearly 20 fights and over half a decade. He stopped “Ol’ Ironhead.”Let’s dive right in.A vintage Wanderlei Silva staredown precedes the bout and it is, of course, amazing.Fujita takes the center of the ring, bullying Silva against towards the ropes and throws a couple of leg kicks which smack against his opponent’s thighs. Silva attempts to answer back with a head kick but misses his target and loses his balance as a result. As he staggers back against the ropes, Fujita takes the opportunity to charge the Brazilian, hoping the mistake will lead to a potentially fight-ending blow.Instead, it nearly proves to be Fujita’s undoing as Silva cracks him across the jaw as he rushes in and staggers “Ol’ Ironhead.”The Japanese warrior stumbles backward and ends up on his knees. Stateside, a fighter might use this position to land some ground and pound or maybe sink in a submission. Across the Pacific, however, kicking a downed opponent was fair game and Silva uses this rule discrepancy to his full advantage.Punches and knees connect in a flurry against Fujita’s skull but he manages to survive. He didn’t earn the moniker “Ol’ Ironhead” for nothing, after all. He manages to clinch up with Silva, who then transitions into a guillotine. The submission attempt is tight but not tight enough and Fujita pops his head out to the delight of the hometown crowd.Too close to the ropes for the referee’s tastes, the action is restarted in the center of the ring. It is at this point Silva reminds everyone he’s not only a stone cold killer on his feet but he’s also a Brazilian jiu-jitsu (BJJ) black belt.He throws up a triangle choke attempt and transitions between that submission and a straight armbar depending on which direction Fujita’s body is attempting to move toward. Sliding between two different submission attempts, Silva is unable to keep hold of either one and by what seems like brute force, Fujita powers out and ends up in his opponent’s full guard. Not much action follows as Silva is unwilling his open his guard which forces Fujita to land only small, short punches. After a minute or so of relative inaction, the referee stands them up and issues them both yellow cards, a warning system and purse deduction method utilized in PRIDE.Each fighter takes a measured approach upon the restart but every time Fujita throws leather, Silva is able to counter well. Two times over a Fujita strike is countered amazingly by the usually wild Brazilian Muay Thai expert.A second head kick from Silva misses, as does the ensuing spinning back fist attempt from Fujita, who apparently hadn’t mastered the strike as well as Dan Henderson. The two finally throw caution to the wind and begin swinging wildly, each hoping to land the killing blow. A leg kick connects for Silva who then lands a nice 3-4 combination. A second similar combination grazes Fujita who is still visibly stunned from the first duo of blows.A third 3-4 cracks Fujita across the jaw and he crumples to the mat.Silva goes in for the kill, attacking Fujita with just about everything as the round begins to tick to a close. Fujita somehow gets back to his feet but more deadly Silva punches land and the Japanese fighter drops to the canvas again.Fujita tries to grab a hold of Silva’s legs but the Brazilian mauler is punching and kicking the crud out of his Japanese opponent. Finally, his corner can take no more and they opt to throw the towel in.Never before had “Ol’ Ironhead” been knocked out but it didn’t matter to “The Axe Murderer.”Coming off an equally brutal knockout over former Strikeforce Middleweight Champion Cung Le, could a similar fate be in store for Franklin? How Startups are Revolutionizing Performance Reviews

first_imgManaging employees at a startup requires ingenuity. Instead of using traditional performance reviews, consider these three alternatives. The employee review process is an important part of any businesses. There must be some way for employees to receive feedback so that they can both improve themselves (if they wish to) and better serve their company. Nonetheless, traditional performance reviews do not meet the needs of every company.Occasionally, traditional employee review processes do not translate well to startup business environments, in which employees wear many hats, metrics are continually changing, and job descriptions are fluid. If you’re part of a startup and charged with overseeing employees, here are some alternatives that might be more suitable to your situation than standard performance reviews.Manage by ObjectivesManagement by objectives (MBO), now considered a dated strategy from the 1960s and 1970s, has its place in startups. This strategy, which was first put forth by Peter Drucker, makes a distinction between job descriptions and performance goals. It judges employees’ performance based performance goals, instead of tasks listed in job descriptions. By shifting the focus from tasks to long-term goals, MBO gives employees flexibility to work in a manner that suits their strengths. For startups, MBO has two benefits. First, it does not use job descriptions as the primary paradigm for evaluating employees, so it can accommodate fluid job descriptions. Second, it empowers employees to find their own solutions for achieving goals, which is helpful when there are not already set best practices in place. The most notable company using this process, and the one responsible for the practice’s new renaissance is Hewlett-Packard. Now, startups are adapting the MBO process to suit their needs. Many are turning to MBO based review structures so that they can help employees be the best they can be.Adjust SMART GoalsThe SMART system (Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Relevant and Time-based) slightly modifies the MBO system to set better goals for employees. SMART makes sure that the goals set are right for the business and the employee by sorting them into important categories. For instance, “sell 1,000 more widgets through the company’s website by the end of the year” meets all of the SMART criteria. It is specific, but still flexible. At startups, employees often must test for the best business practices, so it’s important to give employees freedom to try several strategies. Flexibility helps make SMART goals even more effective.Smart goals are the way to go for most companies, especially for smaller ones that can filter each goal through all of the five categories.Do Away with Individual RewardsPerformance reviews are often directly linked to individual incentives, usually in the form of raises and bonuses. While it makes sense, at least on the surface, to reward high performing employees with more compensation, this may actually undermine employee reviews. Instead of looking at how the employee being reviewed can improve and better help the company, it becomes a discussion of what the employee needs to do to increase their earnings.Doing away with review-based rewards will remove this from the process and let managers and employees have a more open and honest discussion about the employees place within the company — something that needs to be regularly revisited in growing startups.Instead of reserving funds for review-based raises and bonuses, use this money to recruit higher quality employees from the outset. Offer a higher salary, and you will get better performers. This strategy works for Netflix, which stresses salary over incentives. If you’re concerned about using incentives to motivate employees, implement a profit-sharing program or offer stock options. This way, employees benefit when the company does well, not just when they, individually, do a good job.Bonus: Free Guide to Conducting Quarterly ReviewsReviewing performance shouldn’t be an annual process.
