Canyons is halfway to perfection

first_imgFive down, five to go. College of the Canyons’ football team, the defending state champion, is undefeated midway through its schedule, and the Cougars come off a bye week for today’s Western State Conference game at Citrus. Kickoff is at noon. “We don’t talk about going undefeated. That’s not something we do. We just go out and play football,” Canyons coach Chuck Lyon said. “I can’t say I’m surprised that we’re doing well. It’s all about preparation.” Canyons (5-0 overall, 3-0 WSC), on a 19-game winning streak, has won 44 consecutive conference games and 34 in a row during the regular season. “They’re the (mythical) national champs for a reason,” Citrus coach Kevin Emerson said. “There’s no pressure on us to defend anything. There’s no intimidation, either. We can play with anyone.” Citrus (3-2, 3-0), the two-time defending WSC South Division champion, played tough in its opener against El Camino, the nation’s No. 4 team, according to J.C. Grid-Wire, losing 42-32 after trailing by three points during the fourth quarter. The Owls are riding a three-game winning streak. “I doubt if Citrus comes close to matching up with Canyons,” said Hank Ives, editor of J.C. Grid-Wire. “They can’t stop Canyons. I expect Canyons to wear them down. The score will be 38-20, or something along those lines.” Citrus is led by quarterback Bryan Wagner. The Owls committed seven turnovers in their first two games but just two in the last three, an indication the 6-foot-4 freshman is becoming comfortable. Sophomores Mike Williams and Grady Thomas are his primary targets. Dario Camacho is sixth in the state in rushing, averaging 130 yards per game. He gained more than 1,000 yards in seven games last season. Canyons boasts the top-ranked defense in the conference seventh-best in the state, giving up 238 total yards per game, 63 rushing.
